BMW M Car Tuning: M5, M3 & M4 E85 & Stage 1/2
BMW M Car Tuning: Real Numbers on the F90 M5, G80 M3, and M4
BMW’s S58 and S63 engines are some of the best turbocharged performance motors built in the last decade. The G80 M3/M4’s S58 makes 503 hp in Competition trim. The F90 M5 Competition’s S63 produces 617 hp. These are serious numbers out of the box. They’re also not the ceiling.
Stage 1: The Most Straightforward Power Upgrade You Can Make
A Stage 1 tune on a G80 M3 or M4 requires no hardware modifications — just an ECU flash. On premium pump gas (91/93 octane), a properly developed Stage 1 map for the S58 typically adds 50–70 hp and 60–80 lb-ft of torque. That puts you in the 550–580 hp range at the crank.
More important than the peak numbers: the power delivery changes. Stage 1 maps bring boost in harder and earlier, pull the torque limits in 1st and 2nd gear, and extend the top end. The car feels substantially different — not just faster, but more alive.
On the F90 M5, Stage 1 on the S63 is similarly impactful. Starting from 617 hp, you’re looking at 680–720 hp depending on fuel quality and tune.
Stage 2: Adding Hardware
Stage 2 is where things get interesting. The typical Stage 2 build for a G80 M3/M4 includes upgraded downpipes (catless or high-flow), and sometimes a charge pipe or inlet upgrade. With supporting mods and an E30–E50 ethanol blend, you’re looking at 600–650+ hp on the S58.
E85 and Flex Fuel: The Game Changer
Ethanol (E85) has a higher octane rating than pump gas — around 108 AKI — and it has a cooling effect as it vaporizes in the intake. That means more timing advance, more boost, and cooler combustion temperatures. A flex fuel kit with a sensor that reads ethanol content in real time allows the ECU to automatically adjust fueling and timing based on whatever blend is in the tank.
On an S58 with a flex fuel setup and Stage 2 supporting mods, 700+ hp at the crank is realistic. On the S63 in the M5, numbers above 800 hp are achievable with the right build.
